Survey Tools Instructions

Purpose:

Creates a new line feature class using a text file of coordinates. Works with points or polylines. Uses a variant on the GENERATE format for points and polylines. File can include a header line of fields, as is common with CSV files, but these are ignored. Comments with # in column 1 are ignored.

For each point feature:

  • First line is the polyline id, which can be numeric or text.

For each polyline feature:

  • First line is the polyline id, which can be numeric or text.
  • Subsequent lines are vertex coordinates in either XYZM or NEZM order. M is optional but allows for retaining the original survey point ids – but must be numeric.
  • END on its own line ends a polyline.

To run the tool, there are five things you need to provide:

  1. The input text file.
  2. Check the NEZ box if your data are in NEZ format, otherwise it'll assume it's XYZ.
  3. An output shapefile, which can't exist yet.
  4. Choice of point or polyline for feature class type.
  5. Delimiter: comma, space or tab.
