Problem:
Extension options are grayed out. |
|
|
When
opening an extension toolbar such as Spatial Analyst
or Publisher, everything is grayed out.
Cause
The extension has not been activated.
Solution or Workaround
- Open ArcMap or ArcCatalog.
- Select Tools > Extensions.
- Check the box next to the desired extension.
- Click Close.

How
do you install the Advanced ArcMap Settings tool? |
|
|
Some
settings that control ArcMap operations are not accessible
through the interface. The Advanced ArcMap Settings
tool provides a way to adjust some of those settings.
Procedure
- Run SetupArcGIS.exe from the install location.
- Select Add/Remove.
- Expand the ArcObjects Developers Kit feature.
- Set the Utilities option to 'Will be installed on local
hard drive' and click Next.
- Click Next again. This installs the Utilities.
- After the install completes, navigate to Utilities:
-For ArcGIS 8.1, from the ArcGIS folder, click Arcexe81\ArcObjects
Developer Kit\Utilities\VBAdvancedSettingsUtility.
-For ArcGIS versions 8.1.2 and higher, click \arcgis\arcexe\utilities.
- Double-click the AdvAMSet.exe file to start the tool.
For more information about what the Advanced Settings
Utility does, refer to the MS Word document called
"ArcMap Advanced Settings Registry Keys. doc"
that accomapanies the utility. It is found in the
same directory as the utility.

do you do a clean uninstall and reinstall of ArcGIS? |
|

The
following steps will reset the environment variables
and the registry to perform a clean installation of
ArcGIS. Old files or .dll's in the registry are removed.
This process is performed on all local drives.
Procedure
- Uninstall ArcGIS Desktop and Workstation versions, by
clicking Start > Settings > Control Panel. Double-click
Add/Remove Programs. Remove the entries for ArcGIS Desktop
and ArcInfo Workstation.
- Open Windows Explorer.
- Navigate to the 'arcgis' folder and delete it.
- Reboot the computer.
- Place ArcGIS Desktop CD in the CD-ROM drive.
- Close the Auto-Install window.
- Click Start > Run.
- Type the command:
<CD-ROM drive letter>:\setup /cleanup
Be certain to type a space character after the word
'setup'.
- Click OK; the installation will begin.
Reboot and log in with the same administrative privileges.
- To install ArcGIS Workstation in addition to ArcGIS
Desktop, place the ArcGIS Workstation CD into the
CD-ROM drive. Installation will automatically engage.
- Reboot and log in with the same administrative privileges.

Can
I install different versions of different ArcGIS products
on the same machine?
|
|
|
No you cannot. There are multiple ArcGIS products;
ArcInfo, ArcEditor, and ArcView, with multiple versions
for each; 8.0.2, 8.1, 8.1.2, 8.2, 8.3, 9.0 etc. When
installing more than one ArcGIS product on a machine,
you must install the same version number of every
product.
The information in this article does not apply to
ArcView 3.x

9 of ArcGIS.

Error:
Flexlm Error -14: cannot find server hostname in network
database. Server name: Not_Set |
|
|
Error Message
When attempting to start ArcGIS Desktop or Workstation,
the following error may occur:
"Flexlm Error -14: cannot find server hostname
in network database. Server name: Not_Set"
Cause
When the product was initially installed, a license
manager was not selected or the license manager selection
was skipped. The desktop administrator entry was then
set to Not_Set to denote that it is not set yet.
Solution or Workaround
Set the Desktop Administrator's 'License Manager'
setting to the correct hostname of the license server.
Determine the computer's hostname by navigating to
a command prompt by way of: Start > Run, type CMD,
press the Enter key and type in the command HOSTNAME.
This returns the hostname of the machine.
Open Desktop Administrator by way of Start > Programs
> ArcGIS > Desktop Administrator.
Navigate to the License Manager folder in desktop
administrator.
Click 'Change' and type in the hostname obtained in
Step 1. Click OK to finalize the changes.

do you uninstall an extension to ArcGIS Desktop? |

Steps to uninstall an extension to the ArcGIS Desktop
sotware without unistalling the entire software package.
1. Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove
Programs.
2. Highlight ArcGIS Desktop.
3. Click Change.
4. Click Add/Remove in the Installer window.
5. Expand Extensions.
6. Select and expand the menu for the extension to
be uninstalled.
7. Choose "X Entire feature will be unavailable."
8. Click Next, then Finish

How
do you manually enter ArcView Single Use registration
information? |
|
|
This
document details how to manually enter the ArcView Single
Use registration information into the Desktop Administrator
using the fax option.
- Go to Start > Programs > ArcGIS > Desktop Administrator
> Register ArcView and Extensions > Register Now.
- Choose "I have received an authorization file from
ESRI and am now ready to finish the registration process"
and click Next.
- Choose "I received the authorization file by fax,
phone, or mail" and click Next.
- On the left pull down (Product) and fill in the information
with the authorization file you received, which looks
similar to this:

How
do you register extensions for ArcView or ArcEditor
Single Use? |
|
|
No.
The License Manager for ArcGIS 9.0 has had a number
of changes made and those changes are not compatiable
with previous versions of ESRI software. ArcGIS Desktop
and ArcInfo Workstation 9.0 must connect with an ArcGIS
9 License Manager.
ArcGIS 8.x will not work with an ArcGIS 9 License
Manager. ArcGIS 8.x will continue to use the same
ESRI License Manager version as in the past.

Can a 9.0 and 8.x License Manager be installed on the
same machine? |
|
|
This
documents details the steps necessary to register the
extensions for ArcGIS Single Use software.
Prior to beginning this process ensure that you have
a valid registration number for each extension, as
well as the registration number for the Desktop Single
Use software. If any of these numbers are missing
contact ESRI Customer Service before continuing.
Procedure
Each extension for ArcGIS Single Use has its own unique
registration number. The same UNK or EVA number cannot
be used in multiple registration fields.
Follow the steps below to register ArcGIS Single
Use and its extensions. The user logged in must have
administrator privileges.
- Go to Start > Programs > ArcGIS > Desktop
Administrator.
- In the left pane click either 'Register ArcView
and Extensions' or 'Register SingleUse and Extensions.'
- In the right pane click Register Now.
- Choose either of the following options as they
will both guide you through the same wizard:
'I have installed ArcView and need to register
the software'
or
'I have already registered the software and need
to register additions ArcGIS extensions'
- Choose the method to process the registration.
The Internet method is the quickest.
The remainder of this document assumes the Internet
method was selected.
- Over the next two screens fill in the requested
information.
- In the screen titled ArcView or ArcEditor Registration
Number, enter the UNK number for either ArcView
or ArcEditor and click Next.
- If registering ArcGIS Extensions choose the appropriate
option.
The wording varies for different versions.
- Enter the UNK numbers for each of the extension
to be registered. Each extension should have its
own unique registration number.
- Complete the registration wizard.
- Activate the registered extensions.

Is
it necessary to re-register ArcView Single Use after
installing a service pack? |
|
|
Yes, with some of the Service Pack installs it may
be necessary to re-register ArcView Single Use.

How to install ArcGIS for use with Single Use and/or
Concurrent Use Licenses? |
|
|
Instructions
provided describe how to install ArcGIS and the licensing
for both Single Use and Concurrent Use.
Procedure
Select the desired Installation Type.
- SINGLE USE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Verify the ArcGIS Media kit is accessible as well
as the UNK registration numbers before starting
the install.
1. Insert CD 1 from the ArcGIS media kit.
2. The installation wizard begins, select the option,
'Install for Individual Use'.
3. Proceed through the wizard, and accept all of
the default options.
4. At the end of the wizard, a prompt to install
additional components such as ESRI Crystal Reports
and Tutorial Data appears. Select the additional
options to install, and go through the installation
wizards for each.
5. At the end of these wizards, a prompt to register
the product appears. Go through the registration
wizard and enter the appropriate information including
the customer information, and the UNK registration
numbers.
An Internet Connection is required to Register.
6. If it does not prompt for registration at the
end of the installation, activate the registration
wizard by navigating to: Start > Programs >
ArcGIS > Desktop Administrator, and select the
folder Register Single Use and Extensions. Then
select the Register Now button.
7. Finish out of the wizard, and the ArcGIS suite
of software should be accessible.
- CONCURRENT USE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Verify the ArcGIS Media kit is accessible as well
as a hardware key and a license file that matches
the number printed on the hardware key. This number
should be 8 digits in length, and start with a 3.
1. Select the machine to install the license manager
on and insert CD 1 from the ArcGIS media kit.
This can be a local workstation or a server.
2. The installation wizard appears and lists three
options. Select the option, 'Install License Manager
Only'.
3. Proceed through the license manager wizard accepting
the default options, and when prompted, navigate
to the license file.
4. Finish the wizard and reboot the machine. While
the machine is rebooting, plug in the hardware key.

This concludes the install process for the license
manager.
5. Select the machine, or machines to install the
ArcGIS suite on, and perform the software installation
on each of the machines.
6. Insert CD 1 from the ArcGIS media kit and select
the option, 'Install for Individual Use'.
7. The wizard prompts for the location of an operational
license manager. If the license manager is installed
locally, it detects it and asks if it should be
used. Select Yes. If the license manager is installed
on another machine, navigate the network for the
machine that the license manager software is installed
on, and then continue with the wizard.
8. Go through the wizard and accept the default
options.
9. At the end of the wizard, a prompt to install
additional components such as ESRI Crystal Reports
and Tutorial Data appears. Select the additional
options to install, and proceed through the installation
wizards for each.
10. At the end of these wizards, the ArcGIS suite
of software should be accessible.
