| This
webpage defines who may use the IGISc facility, and provides
guidelines for acceptable use. These guidelines are intended
to cover information, which may supplement campus-wide guidelines,
procedures or protocols with respect to proper use of computing
resources at SFSU. |
|
|
- It is the USER'S RESPONSIBILITY TO OBTAIN and REMEMBER
THIS INFORMATION.
- Access to the computers or computer-related equipment
in the IGISc facility is limited to current SFSU students
involved in geospatial/cartographic research and/or courses,
faculty/staff members, and vendors/contractors working through
the IGISc. Visitors may use the labs as part of officially
sanctioned college and university events.
- The use of IGISc computer resources is a privilege. It
is not a right.
- If requested, users should be prepared to sign in and/or
may be requested to present a valid SFSU picture ID when
they enter the IGISc facility.
- Be respectful of others lab users, lab equipment and area
at all times in the computer labs.
- By using any computer in the IGISc at SFSU, you agree
to abide by this policy.
- Users of the facility must also abide by the SFSU Academic
Regulations, which are available from the Registrar’s
office.

- Food and drinks are only permitted in designated areas
in the facility away from equipment. They must also be in
containers with closed lids. Under no circumstance may food
or drinks be placed beside computer equipment.
- All noise levels (include: talking, music, muffled headphone
noise, etc) in the lab should be kept to a minimum so that
others are not disturbed. The facility is to be used as
a research/study environment.
- Computers are available to students only during computer
lab hours of operation and when no reservations are scheduled
in the room. Computers are available on a first come first
serve basis unless otherwise indicated.
- At times, IGISc can be a heavily used facility. Other
users may consider computers unattended for more than 30
minutes available for use.
- Users are only permitted to use workstations set aside
for student use. IGISc personnel workstations are off limits
and are clearly marked.
- Computers are configured according to the needs of students
and faculty/staff. Users must not change hardware or software
configuration settings. Users who have suggestions for a
hardware or software configuration change should speak to
the person who manages the facility.
- Individuals are not permitted to install, modify or delete
any software on lab computers. Software that comes with
textbooks need to gain permission from the IGISc administrator
before installing the software. Suggestions for new software
may be made to IGISc personnel.
- Each account is assigned to a single individual, who is
responsible for all computer usage under that account. Sharing
computer accounts is not permitted.
- You may NOT use your IGISc account for any business practices
and you may NOT use your e-mail address as a business address
while in the facility.
- Recreational use of computers during busy times is not
permitted. Example: Recreational web-surfing, recreational
e-mail, chatting, games, etc.
- All computer lab users must log off after they have finished
with the computer. This is to protect your account and our
system from mischievous users. Users not logging off will
have their accounts disabled until they contact an IGISc
personnel. Users not aware of proper logoff procedures should
contact an IGISc personnel for help. This policy also applies
to University employees both part time and full time.
- Users are to clean up the area around the computer they
used as they leave. This includes making sure all removal
storage is removed from the computer and any unwanted paper
is placed in the recycle bin.
- To respect the privacy of other users; for example, users
shall not intentionally seek information on, obtain copies
of, or modify files, tapes, or passwords belonging to other
users, or misrepresent others, unless explicitly authorized
to do so by those users.
- All equipment in the computer labs is not to be removed,
modified, relocated, or disassembled without permission
from IGISc Administrator.
- Problems with computer lab equipment are to be reported
to the lab personnel immediately.
- The facility will close at the prescribed times. Users
will be advised at least 10 minutes prior to closing so
that they may save their work and collect their things.
No student will be allowed to stay in the lab after closing
unless otherwise outlined through an outstanding grant/contract.

- Telephones in the IGISc are not courtesy phones. Lab users
are not to use or receive calls in the lab. There are several
public phones in the hallways of HSS and immediately outside
the building.
- Cell phones and pagers should be set to silent or vibrate
mode while working in the IGISc. If a call is received please
leave the facility to continue conversations on the cell
phone.
- The fax machine is solely for IGISc personnel. Do not
ask to use it.

- Internet access is provided for educational use, visiting
sites (viewing or printing) of inappropriate nature or that
may be considered offensive by other individuals is not
considered acceptable use of this service at SFSU.
- Sending/Posting harassing messages or repeatedly sending/posting
unwanted messages (electronic or paper) to others is prohibited.
- You may not connect any personal computer equipment to
the college network without prior authorization from IGISc
staff and/or BSS Computing.
- You may not attempt to intercept, analyze, record, or
tamper with network data packets.
- IGISc Computing Resources may not be used for illegal
or disruptive purposes. Examples of illegal or disruptive
purposes include, but are not limited to: - Intentional
harassment of other users. - Intentional destruction of
or damage to equipment, software, or data belonging to IGISc,
BSS, SFSU or other users. - Intentional disruption or unauthorized
monitoring of electronic communications. - Intentional denial
of services to users.

- The printers in the labs are intended to serve the individual-copy
printing needs of staff and designated contracts/grants,
not for general printing. Individuals printing in the IGISc
should NOT use it as a replacement for photocopy machines.
Users who need to produce multiple copies of a document
should print a master copy and then photocopy it. The SFSU
Library offers photocopying services.
- Excessive printing at once or over the course of the semester
is not permitted.
- Any user who has not been trained by IGISc staff on the
proper procedures for unjamming or otherwise maintaining
printers are to request assistance from IGISc personnel
and NOT open or try to fix the printers.
- Reproduction of any copyrighted material (eg. software,
music, video, books, photographs, etc) is prohibited and
will be dealt with as according to United States copyright
laws.

- You are responsible for your own data storage. Feel free
to copy data to the computers D: drive while working on
a project but do not depend on that copy of data alone (someone
else might erase it). The scratch drive is regularly wiped
clean. Copy your update files when you finish working to
CD, floppy, zip disk or your Personal Storage Space on the
network (if provided), DO NOT leave on the C: or D: drive.
- Data stored in the Personal Storage Space will be deleted
when your account expires. It is your responsibility to
back up your data before your account expires.
- In an operational sense, IGISc generally regards files
in your account and data on the network as private: that
is, employees of IGISc do not routinely look at this information.
However, the facility reserves the right to view or scan
any file or software stored on college systems or transmitted
over college networks, and will do so periodically to verify
that software and hardware are working correctly, to look
for particular kinds of data or software (such as computer
viruses), or to audit the use of college resources. Violations
of policy that come to the IGISc and BSS Computing Services'
attention during these and other activities will be acted
upon.

| Computers
in the IGISc are open for student use on a first come, first
serve basis. The IGISc facility provides stations for users
with disabilities. When users identify themselves as disabled
and request immediate access, they shall be given access to
a designated station only if a vacant computer is available
for the student who is being relocated. |

Any breach of this
policy could result in punitive action, including (but not
limited to) loss of computer privileges, deletion of your
account, departmental action, applicable disciplinary action,
and referral to the Disciplinary Committee as governed by
the applicable provision of the Code of Student Conduct found
in the SFSU Bulletin. Sanctions for violation of these guidelines
may include revocation or suspension of computer access privileges
in addition to any other sanctions provided in Title 5, California
Code of Regulations
Violations of law may also be referred for criminal or civil
prosecution. Resources covered by these guidelines include
host computer systems, personal computers and workstations,
computer peripherals, communications networks, software, removable
media, and files.
The use of these resources is governed by federal and state
law, as well as by California State University Trustees and
San Francisco State University policies and procedures. The
University may monitor access to any of these resources in
order to ensure security of its systems and networks and to
enforce University policies. |

| Electronic
records sent, received, or stored on computers owned, leased,
or administered by the CSU is the property of the California
State University Trustees. As the property of the CSU, the content
of such records, including electronic mail, is subject to inspection
by IGISc/CSU personnel. While the CSU does not routinely do
so, the CSU is able and reserves the right to monitor and /
or log all network activity of users without notice, including
all e-mail and Internet communications. Users should have no
reasonable expectation of privacy in the use of these resources.
