   Policy and Procedure
Purpose
This webpage defines who may use the IGISc facility, and provides guidelines for acceptable use. These guidelines are intended to cover information, which may supplement campus-wide guidelines, procedures or protocols with respect to proper use of computing resources at SFSU.
General
  • It is the USER'S RESPONSIBILITY TO OBTAIN and REMEMBER THIS INFORMATION.
  • Access to the computers or computer-related equipment in the IGISc facility is limited to current SFSU students involved in geospatial/cartographic research and/or courses, faculty/staff members, and vendors/contractors working through the IGISc. Visitors may use the labs as part of officially sanctioned college and university events.
  • The use of IGISc computer resources is a privilege. It is not a right.
  • If requested, users should be prepared to sign in and/or may be requested to present a valid SFSU picture ID when they enter the IGISc facility.
  • Be respectful of others lab users, lab equipment and area at all times in the computer labs.
  • By using any computer in the IGISc at SFSU, you agree to abide by this policy.
  • Users of the facility must also abide by the SFSU Academic Regulations, which are available from the Registrar’s office.

  • Food and drinks are only permitted in designated areas in the facility away from equipment. They must also be in containers with closed lids. Under no circumstance may food or drinks be placed beside computer equipment.
  • All noise levels (include: talking, music, muffled headphone noise, etc) in the lab should be kept to a minimum so that others are not disturbed. The facility is to be used as a research/study environment.
  • Computers are available to students only during computer lab hours of operation and when no reservations are scheduled in the room. Computers are available on a first come first serve basis unless otherwise indicated.
  • At times, IGISc can be a heavily used facility. Other users may consider computers unattended for more than 30 minutes available for use.
  • Users are only permitted to use workstations set aside for student use. IGISc personnel workstations are off limits and are clearly marked.
  • Computers are configured according to the needs of students and faculty/staff. Users must not change hardware or software configuration settings. Users who have suggestions for a hardware or software configuration change should speak to the person who manages the facility.
  • Individuals are not permitted to install, modify or delete any software on lab computers. Software that comes with textbooks need to gain permission from the IGISc administrator before installing the software. Suggestions for new software may be made to IGISc personnel.
  • Each account is assigned to a single individual, who is responsible for all computer usage under that account. Sharing computer accounts is not permitted.
  • You may NOT use your IGISc account for any business practices and you may NOT use your e-mail address as a business address while in the facility.
  • Recreational use of computers during busy times is not permitted. Example: Recreational web-surfing, recreational e-mail, chatting, games, etc.
  • All computer lab users must log off after they have finished with the computer. This is to protect your account and our system from mischievous users. Users not logging off will have their accounts disabled until they contact an IGISc personnel. Users not aware of proper logoff procedures should contact an IGISc personnel for help. This policy also applies to University employees both part time and full time.
  • Users are to clean up the area around the computer they used as they leave. This includes making sure all removal storage is removed from the computer and any unwanted paper is placed in the recycle bin.
  • To respect the privacy of other users; for example, users shall not intentionally seek information on, obtain copies of, or modify files, tapes, or passwords belonging to other users, or misrepresent others, unless explicitly authorized to do so by those users.
  • All equipment in the computer labs is not to be removed, modified, relocated, or disassembled without permission from IGISc Administrator.
  • Problems with computer lab equipment are to be reported to the lab personnel immediately.
