Institute for Geographic Information Science at San Francisco State University
   Research Facility

The core of geospatial research activity takes place in the Institute for Geographic Information Science located in HSS 272. The IGISc includes hardware and software for image processing and geospatial analysis, as well as a wide array of ancillary and supporting equipment.

Hardware
The foundation of the IGISc is a 155Mb ATM network connecting 10 workstations (Dell GX620 3.8 Ghz P4, 2.0 G RAM) and a Dell Poweredge Server housing the mass storage devices (total amount of disk space to 137 Gb). The IGISc facility also includes a wide array of input-output devices. For data output the IGISc supports one large-format image scanner and a Calcomp digitizer. HP Designjet 1055CM plus large-format plotter, HP Designjet 110 plus large-format plotter, HP650c large-format plotter, and HP2600 color postscript printers are used for map production. Other ancillary equipment include a Nikon slide scanner, Nikon film writer, and array of data storage devices.

Software
A large suite of applications software provides state-of-the-art capabilities for image processing, mapping, modeling, statistical analysis, and visualization:

ArcGIS (ArcInfo Desktop) and ArcView
A University site license for ArcGIS (ArcInfo Desktop) and extensions (3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, Street Map, Spatial Analyst, Survey Analyst, Tracking Analyst, ArcPress, ArcScan, Publisher, Maplex), as well as, ArcPad, ArcIMS, and ArcView 3.3 with extensions (3D Analyst, Network Analyst, Spatial Analyst, Image Analyst, ArcPress) provide the primary GIS analysis and modeling tools for IGISc users.

Leica/ERDAS Imagine
SFSU has a license (70 seats) for Leica's ERDAS Imagine, Photgrammetry Suite and other modules (OrthoBase/Pro, Virtual GIS, Radar, Stereo Analyst, Image Analysis for ArcGIS, Stereo Analyst for ArcGIS) and form the base solution for image processing and GIS integration in the IGISc.

SPSS
SFSU has a site license for SPSS (a modular product line for data analysis) and other statistical modules to meet the analytical needs of the laboratory

The IGISc research facility schedule is regularly updated so consult our posted hours and review our policies for facility availability and procedures.
