ArcMap Installation Instructions

Step 1: Activating your student evaluation license

  1. Review the ArcGIS Desktop system requirements to ensure the software will be compatible with your computer. For example, make sure you have Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 or later installed.
  2. Register your license by visiting the Esri student edition website. Note that you will be prompted to create an Esri online account if you do not already have one.
  3. Enter your authorization code (ex: EVA123456789).

Step 2: Downloading ArcGIS Desktop Advanced

  1. Download the software from this SF State Box folder (currently ArcMap 10.8.1): https://sfsu.box.com/v/ArcMap-10-8-1 
  2. Once downloaded to your hard drive, double-click on the ArcGIS_Desktop_1081_175110 to extract the files to the default location
  3. Keep the checkbox checked for Launch the setup program
  4. Choose Close which will prompt the ArcGIS Desktop setup program window to proceed with installation

Step 3: Installing the software

  1. Follow the ArcGIS Desktop setup program window instructions accepting the defaults, review and accept the master license agreement
  2. Choose a Complete installation and select Next to accept defaults
  3. The whole process may take around 15 minutes
  4. Click Finish

Step 4: Licensing

  1. When installation is complete, the ArcGIS Administrator wizard window will pop up. Choose the Advanced (ArcInfo) Single Use option. Then select Authorize Now to launch the software authorization wizard.
  2. Choose the first authorization method (I have installed my software and need to authorize it) and click Next.
  3. Choose the first authorization option (Authorize with Esri now using the Internet) and click Next.
  4. Enter your name and university information then click Next.
  5. In the following window, enter your industry affiliation (Organization: Education-Student, Industry: Higher Education, Yourself: Student) and click Next.
  6. Enter the 12 digit authorization number (e.g EVA123456789) you activated in Step 1 and click Next
  7. Select the I do not want to authorize any extensions at this time option (extensions are automatically activated for the student edition) and click Next.
  8. Click Next to skip the evaluation extensions window.
  9. A message will show up to confirm the activation of your product. Click "Finish" when activation process is finalized. The installation is now complete. 
  10. You should now be able to launch ArcGIS Desktop from your Start Menu

Esri provides single use licenses to university affiliates that are valid until San Francisco State University's contract ends each year. Please note that ArcGIS is not compatible with a Mac operating system and runs on Windows only.

Step 1: Downloading ArcGIS Desktop Advanced

Step 2: Download the license (called a provisioning file)

  1. Download ArcGIS software from the SF State Box folder located here: https://sfsu.box.com/s/mmlod68olgnv88cf1iu9s5ujdwspn9xi 
  2. Log in with your SF State credentials (i.e., your 9-digit id number and associated password) and download the .prvc file
  3. Follow the steps in ArcMap Instructions guide in this folder to install and license the software using the .exe and .prvc file you just downloaded
